About this time of year I am normally getting ready to think about preparing for the annual Brighton Speed Trials – I have competed there for the last eighteen years. Sadly though, if you have not already heard, this year’s event has been cancelled. There have been gaps in running the Brighton Speed Trials over the years but in recent times there has been a long uninterrupted run. However, last year saw a tragic accident with the sad loss of Charlotte Tagg, from Suffolk, who was riding in the sidecar of a black Honda Asco when the motorbike crashed at the end of the run. This year the event had unfortunately started slowly because police were investigating a stabbing in Madeira Drive and then it ended badly with this tragic accident. The organisers ensure that all the safety standards are met but at the time of writing the investigation into last year’s tragedy was still on going. Therefore, until the findings have been published the organisers felt that it would be unwise to hold this year’s event. This is no doubt a wise decision. Charlotte, a mother of three, was well known at the Trials and she will be gravely missed. I am sure that you will be happy for me, on behalf of the Centre, to send our condolences and thoughts to Charlotte’s family as the anniversary approaches. Let’s hope we see the return of the Brighton Speed Trials as a fitting tribute to competitors past, present and of course for those yet to come.
On a happier note, in September for our visit to Clandon Park we have been allowed to display our Morgan Sports Cars in front of the house. We have around ten cars wanting to join us so far but if you would like to join in please let me know so that I can let Clandon Park know our final numbers, etc. It should be a great day out. For a bit of fun, Steve Bridge has suggested that we resurrect our tradition for a run to the Bentley Drivers’ meeting at Silverstone. What a good idea I thought: Steve has sent me the route and there is nothing to stop us. Hence, if you fancy a run up to Silverstone for this fine meeting please meet at the Bird In Hand car park at 09:00 on 10th August. If you are planning to come please let me know so that we know who to expect. The last time we did this I hurt my back. I hope this time things will be better and I will make it with you all to the Bentley Drivers at Silverstone. I hope to see you there. It should be a great day out for sure.
Please don’t forget that this month Tony Newbery is organising for us to show our cars at a vintage glider rally and Tim Marsh is involved/camping at an extraordinary live music show with classic & vintage cars and other assorted vehicles, auto jumble all being held at White Waltham Airfield, Waltham road, over two days. These are two events with a strong aviation connection are both well worth a visit. I would like to thank Tony and Tim for these two new and interesting events.
